Orcas Islander Jacob Angel is the Author of Ecology A to Z. Meet Jacob at the Library on December 12th, and hear about his new book. Ecology A to Z teaches simple solutions to help protect our planet Earth in a fun-to-read rhyme that is entertaining, as well as, educational.

Meet Photographer & Author Paul Bannick
|
Award-winning photographer Paul Bannick will take you on a visual journey of key North American habitats through the needs of specific owl and woodpecker species. This stunning photographic study will be accompanied by field stories, and rich natural history derived from thousands of hours in the field. His talk will look at the way owls and woodpeckers define and enrich their habitat and how their life-histories are intertwined.

Paul is an award winning photographer who's work has appeared in Audubon magazine, Sunset magazine, Pacific Northwest magazine, the National Wildlife Federation Guide to North American Birds and in many other books, magazines, parks, refuges and other places in North America and Europe.
Paul works full time for Conservation Northwest, an environmental organization dedicated to protecting and connecting wild areas from the Pacific Coast to the Canadian Rockies. |

Screening & Discussion of “My Big Fat Diet”

Come to the Library on Friday, September 5th, to watch the film “My Big Fat Diet”, which documents how members of a tribal fishing village off the coast of Alert Bay changed their eating habits to help
combat obesity and diabetes. In a study funded by Health Canada and the University of British Columbia, Dr. Jay Wortman asks members of the Namgis First Nation to give up sugars and junk food and return to a more “traditional diet” which includes wild salmon and oolican grease. |
My Big Fat Diet, also looks at the history and present-day status of traditional food gathering, and the link between individual health and that of the immediate environment.

Mask Making Workshops @ the Library!

Join Jessica Carter for these free mask making workshops, just in time to make your own Halloween or holiday mask! Over two weeks, students will learn how to make face masks using aluminum foil, tape, and paint. All students will need to bring is one roll of aluminum foil and a 1” roll of masking tape. These classes will be held in the Library Meeting Room. Registration is required for this event, and is open to all ages. Children should be accompanied by an adult. Washington to complete the Iditarod Race, is coming back to San Juan Island to talk about her experiences as a sled dog racer! If you missed Laura’s first talk at the Library, make sure you don’t miss her this time! Laura is filled with amazing stories about what it was like to run with her dogs along the historic 1,049 mile trail in Alaska!
